Like so many of you, our world has certainly been different – and not just because we’re on the mission field. On Monday, March 23, we were put under a quarantine order here in Taubaté. Most stores and businesses closed and churches were not permitted to meet physically. There are definite restrictions here in Brazil, but not nearly as severe as other places have adopted. For that, we’re truly grateful. The last few weeks have been highly unusual in our lives, as we know they certainly have been in yours.
While restrictions have been implemented, we were still able to begin language school. It’s been amazing how the Lord has already blessed this time in our lives. Truly, our Father knew exactly what would happen and the needs that we would have. Our teachers have been challenging us daily in the classroom and we’re so thankful for the opportunity that we have! Outside the classroom, Brazilians – very uncharacteristically – are reticent during this time. Chances for us to really practice have been hard to come by. Fear has certainly gripped this country. I have been reminded over and over during this time Psalm 142:3 “When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path…” David was fearful. But even when things seemed to be at rock bottom, God still knew what He was doing. God’s still in control. We’ll get through this. What a time to show a lost world that we really do TRUST God! Please continue to pray for us with language acquisition – practice, sharing the Gospel, and helping people during this extraordinary period.
I’ve had the opportunity to help with the online services over the last few weeks. The challenge for me has been singing in Portuguese. The basic tunes I know, but the words, obviously, I don’t. I’m not entirely sure if the Brazilians can understand when I sing, but I know I’ve sure enjoyed the new challenge. We’ve definitely had our foibles with the language – and I’m sure many more to come! But, as we take it all in stride, we’re thankful for the teachers and church the Lord has surrounded us with to help us learn. Though the technology is nice to be able to still have services, we so desire for the assembling again soon of our local church!
We know that you pray for us. We’re so thankful for your partnership with us. We would love to know how we could pray for you during this time. Please, if there’s anything that we can pray for you all about, do not hesitate to contact us.
